Minutes from Meeting with Ann Keen (Health Minister) 20/07/09

Last July (20/07/09) I (Jacky), met with Ann Keen to discuss a few outstanding issues that The Velcade Three had and to share some ideas that we felt may aid smoother transition when Consultants are applying for Velcade for Myeloma sufferers.

Ms Pickles began the meeting by stating that she had previously met with Sir Mike Rawlins, Chairman of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and Professor Mike Richards, National Cancer Director.

The Velcade Three would like to thank…

  • Special thanks to Harry and Christine Brisland from The Turkey Inn, Keighley who have supported us over the past 18 months. Their fundraising events have included a Treasure Hunt, Anne Summers party, Body Shop party, an Outdoor Dinner party and a champagne reception followed by a four course meal. These events have raised over £1,000 for our campaign. Thank you.
  • On February 2nd an "open house" was held at the Cowling home of Mr and Mrs Howard Potts to celebrate Jeans 60th birthday. The couples many friends and family had a very enjoyable evening during which Jean made the kind gesture of asking her guests if,in place of gifts to herself, they would give a donation to be split between The Velcade Three and an Altzeimers Charity. We would like to say a big thank you to Jean and her family for thinking of us and raising £170 in total to help both causes.
  • The Velcade Three would like to say a Big Thank you to pupils and staff of Rhodesway School in Bradford for their very generous donations of near £900 towards our campaign for the drug Velcade to be available to ALL Myeloma sufferers on the NHS. We are so grateful to you for thinking of us. A valued and integral member of our trio is Jacky Pickles, whose son Sean is a Science Teacher at the school. Sean has always given us his strong and continuous support with our campaign and has an excellent understanding of the disease so if any one of you are interested to learn more about Myeloma and our battle for access to this novel and important drug, Velcade, please get in touch with Mr. Pickles who will be happy to explain and discuss any issues concerning the importance of our campaign.
  • Thank you to Jonny Holmes of Silsden who along with Richard Spencer and Stuart Gill undertook to fundraise for us when they took part in the Weston Super Mare Beach Race at the end of October. Unfortunately Richard and Stuart were unable to complete the arduous event but Jonny struggled through-even though he needed a week off work afterwards to get over it!-and raised £145 towards our total.
  • Rakish Paddy night was a great success, raising more than £850.
  • A bucket collection at Morrison's in Guiseley raised over £235.
  • Thank you to Katherine Wrigglesworth for raising funds by taking part in the "Race for Life".
  • Thank you to Joe Mulroy for the donation from the London Marathon.
  • The car boot sales held at Silsden and Airedale made over £165.
  • The Virgin Vie party brought in more funds - £160 - thank you Estelle!
  • A pampered Chef party raised over £160 - thanks to Kath Walsh.
  • Raffles organised by Toni, beautician of Oakworth Rd, Keighley raised nearly £800.
  • Over £300 was raised from a raffle on 14th April by Keighley OKeh Soul Club at their Northern Soul night.
  • The cheese and wine evening at Laycock Village Hall in March raised over £1,300 and the band Derrida who held a gig also at the Laycock Village Hall on 7th April raised over £750.
  • £1,700 was raised from the music event with Matt Green on 3rd March at St Annes Social Club Keighley.
  • Keighley Cougars V Bradford Bulls fund raising event raised £716.14.
  • Damart and Britannic Lifts have continued to donate monies.
  • 2 local hospitals have donated to the cause - Bradford Royal Infirmary and Airedale General Hospital.
  • In December - we raised £380 fundraising in Sainsbury's.
  • 25th October - Morrisons - received pledge of £1,000 and raised further £600.
